Changing your baby’s nappy

For your baby’s comfort, you should change him whenever necessary. This helps to avoid problems caused by prolonged exposure to wet or dirty nappies, including nappy rash or inflammation of skin folds (intertrigo).

  1. Change your baby as soon as his nappy is soiled. Generally this is around 10 times a day. The number of dirty nappies decreases with age.
  2. Every time you change your baby’s nappy, carefully clean his bottom by wiping from front to back so faeces do not come into contact with the genitals. Dry carefully to minimise the risk of irritation.
  3. If you have a boy, cover his penis with a wipe while changing his nappy to avoid getting sprayed.
  4. Apply a thin layer of protective ointment to his bottom.
