Where is burdock found?

Burdock is a biennial or perennial plant with fusiform roots. It grows in the Northern hemisphere and can be found across Europe, Asia, Siberia, Japan and North America. However, it does not grow in the Mediterranean region.

The burdock prefers nitrogen-rich, generally clay-like soils and is most often found growing along trails. The name "burdock" comes from the Latin "barrum" (mud) because it grows in debris.

Also known as Arctium Lappa, burdock is a large herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae (or Compositae) family.

Its soothing and softening qualities have been known since Antiquity. Its reputation for effectiveness was strengthened in the 16th century when it was used to heal King Henry III from a skin disease.

Officially, the French Medication Agency recognises burdock for local application as a "softening and antipruritic adjuvant treatment for dermatological ailments". [Medicinal products of plant origin – Annex II – p 59]

Today, it is commonly used in phytotherapy for its softening, calming and purifying action.
